Description
Before Reading:
- Show and Tell: Bring in some stuffed animals or pictures of baby animals and let the kids guess what kind they are. Talk about their different names, like chicks for baby chickens, calves for baby cows, and foals for baby horses.
- Animal Sounds: Play some recordings of baby animal sounds and have the kids try to identify them. Can they guess which sound belongs to a baby elephant, a lamb, or a lion cub?
- Create a Habitat: Set up a small area in your home or classroom to represent a baby animal’s habitat. You could use a blanket or sheet to create a jungle for baby monkeys, or fill a bin with sand and shells for baby sea turtles.
While Reading:
- Storytelling: Take turns reading the book aloud, letting each child take on a different voice for the baby animal characters.
- Scavenger Hunt: Hide pictures of different baby animals around the room and have the kids go on a scavenger hunt to find them. Once they find one, they can tell you what they know about that animal.
- Matching Game: Make a simple matching game using pictures of baby animals and their parents. Can the kids match the fluffy duckling to its mama duck?
- Coloring Pages: Print out some coloring pages of baby animals and let the kids get creative.
